It
was fifty years ago in 1964 when Denver racer Mark
Williams decided to quit his machinist job at John
Bandimere, Sr’s speed emporium and go into business
for himself building race cars. In the ensuing years Mark
Williams Enterprises became the “go to”
shop for High Country racers. In addition to the fuel dragster
he campaigned with the
late Bill Rice, racers like the Kaiser Bros., John Abbott,
Vern Moats, Vern & Brian Raymer and Motes & Williams
demonstrated the prowess of M-W’s chassis'. The word
spread, and soon racers like “Ohio George” Montgomery
and Florida’s Jerry Gwynn were winning NHRA events with
Mark Williams’ chassis. Williams himself won the Division
V Top Fuel Championship when partnered with Larry Frazier.
During this time Williams began to manufacture various components
to compliment his chassis. AXLES
In the late 1970s, sensing a need in the marketplace, Mark
Williams came out with the industry’s first guaranteed
axle, the “Hi-Torque.” All “Hi-Torque”
and budget-minded “MasterLine” axles are individually
made to the customer’s requirements. Having the shaft
taper from the bearing seat to the spline is a key factor
in an axle’s ductility and overall reliability.
DRIVESHAFTS
In a quest to build the lightest and strongest driveshafts,
MW developed the patented Accu-bonding process. This process
is used to manufacture aluminum and carbon fiber driveshafts.
Now, MW has the most comprehensive driveshaft testing and
manufacturing capabilities in the industry. MW also developed
a sophisticated computer-controlled torsional testing device
that can exert loads up to 15,000 foot pounds torque in
measured cycles.
Data accumulated from extensive testing has helped SFI establish
the specifications that are the cornerstone of the 43.1
Specs program.
MODULARS
Recognizing the shortcomings of steel housings, MW developed
the first modular housing to accommodate
the popular 9” Ford components. The most important
feature of MW modular housings is that everything is CNC
machined to exacting tolerances, which makes for optimum
alignment of axles, bearings, gears, etc. for maximum efficiency.
BRAKES
The company is also known for its premium grade disc brakes.
Kits feature a one-piece aluminum hub/brake hat. The innovative
Slot-Drive™ system, used to attach the rotor to the
hat or hub, reduces the weight of the rotor while directing
heat way from the hub bearings – eliminating warpage.
M-W rotors are double disc ground to ensure that both sides
are absolutely parallel.
